The coin dates back to Roman emperor Hadrian’s rule in the 2nd Century. The seven stars are hotly debated in coin communities but many think they represent the 7 planets in ancient astronomy: Jupiter, Mars, Saturn, Sol, Venus, Mercury and Luna.
The original coin was broken on the side, most likely getting stuck to other coins in production. To me, the jagged edge looks like the moon in its waxing gibbous phase.
