Mastering the Mix: How to Style Gold and Silver Together

There was once an old "rule" in jewelry: you had to pick a side. You were either a gold person or a silver person. The J Fields Jewelry policy is that the most interesting style stories are told HOW YOU WANT.
Mixing separate gold and silver pieces creates a look that feels collected, not matched. It’s about taking that 14k gold heirloom ring and pairing it with a chunky silver dome ring (the Wawona might be calling you) to create something entirely new. With the price of gold on the rise, choosing to invest in silver can make price points accessible.
The Science of the Studio
When I’m working in the studio, I treat gold and silver with the same level of reverence, artistically and technically. Whether I’m preparing a batch for my Paragon SC2 Kiln or monitoring a pour in the V.I.C. 9 casting machine (are we nerding out enough on tools yet?), I’m thinking about how to elevate the material, what stones to use, how to use texture and sparkle to honor the material.
The warmth of gold and the cool, moody tone of silver are a natural pair. It feels very celestial to wear both.

3 Ways to Mix Your Metals Like a Pro
1. The Power of the Stack
The easiest way to start is on your fingers. Try "sandwiching" your metals. If you have two silver bands, place a 14k gold ring between them. This creates a deliberate, look that proves the mix was intentional.
2. Layering Necklaces and Metals
When it comes to necklaces, vary your textures and lengths. A delicate gold chain with a moonstone pendant (try the moonstone tray) looks incredible layered against a slightly shorter silver link chain with a little bit of oxidation and substantial links. I also love a silver pendant on a gold chain!

3. Balance the Ratio
You don’t need an even 50/50 split. A 70/30 distribution often feels more balanced. If your go-to rings are mostly silver, try adding one bold gold statement piece like a signet ring or a pair of hoops.
Why It Works?
You’ve gathered pieces throughout your life. A silver talisman from a trip, a gold band from a loved one. Show them off, wear them, don't be afraid of mixed metals, and show your collection some love and creativity!
