Collecting Watch Fobs: A Personal Connection to Time and Story
My Almanac collection is a reflection on time and a wish for good fortune in the year ahead. I’ve always been drawn to symbols of luck and timekeepers, which naturally led me to a historic piece of jewelry I lust after: the watch fob.
For anyone drawn to an antique aesthetic, vintage jewelry, or heirloom accessories, watch fobs are a fascinating collectible. Every time I wear my new initial fob, someone asks me about it. They are mystical and mysterious as well as beautiful.
The History of Watch Fobs
Fobs are amazing examples of fine craftsmanship. These small, decorative pieces originally helped individuals pull pocket watches from their pockets, but over time became personalized accessories. Dating back to the 1500s, functional jewelry like fobs evolved with leather straps and ornate designs, and by the 1870s they became both practical and expressive. Fobs were made in precious metals with gemstones at the bottom and sides. Many were even used as promotional items or repurposed medals, making each collectible fob a miniature piece of pocket watch history.
Echoing with stories of the past, they carry the same heirloom qualities I am exploring in my Almanac collection. My new line of watch fobs carries this spirit forward. Each one a modern piece inspired by history.
